  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • The Respiratory Patient Education Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating pulmonary education programs specific but not limited to Asthma and Tracheostomy Education. Coordinates and teaches courses to patients, families, and healthcare professionals. This position is a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) that is a certified asthma educator with a minimum of two years of clinical experience. Reports to department leadership.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Conducts formal and/or informal needs assessment; plans, coordinates, implements, evaluates, and documents educational activities for patient/family education.
    • Provides classes and/or individual education sessions to patients and caregivers in the hospital and provides feedback to licensed providers.
    • Uses knowledge and skill with health literacy and adult learning principles to develop and utilize approved curricula for educational materials.
    • Provides monthly reports to the director of respiratory care regarding asthma and trach referrals and education metrics.
    • Provides asthma and tracheostomy education and competency validation at patient care orientation for clinical staff.
    • Provides in-services about asthma and tracheostomy care to facilitate the ongoing professional and clinical development of RN’s, RT’s, and other clinical staff members,
    • Ensures the education and completion of the asthma action plan for staff, caregivers, and patients.
    • Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of pulmonary education programs for patients and families.
    • Participates in the discharge planning and education process
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • Current registration as a Registered Respiratory Therapist from the National Board of Respiratory Care.
    • American Heart Association (AHA) certification such as Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) designation is required and/or must be obtained.
    • American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) certification such as Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) designation is required and/or must be obtained.
    • Advanced credential: Asthma Educator certification AE-C.
    • CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Bachelor’s in Respiratory Care preferred; will consider Associates degree with applicable experience.
    • Minimum of two years in pediatric and neonatal ICU experience required.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently in all clinical areas within the health system.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
