Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Mental Health Therapy Manager, the Mental Health Consult and Liaison nurse conducts mental health assessments and provides education and support to patients and their families while they are admitted to the medical unit or are present in the emergency department. In addition, this individual acts as a liaison between disciplines, departments and community supports providing skill and education to staff caring for patients with mental health needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts clinical psychiatric evaluations to include eliciting for mental health symptoms, chronic illness, trauma, disability, as well as the primary support group, educational system, social environment, legal system, and other psychosocial and environmental problems.
  • Evaluates children and adolescents for risk to harm self or others and triggers to such.
  • Develops a clinical treatment plan to address diagnosis and symptoms identified.
  • Provides education and consultation regarding psychiatric treatment, management and psychopharmacology for staff.
  • Shares plan of care with physician, nurse, and ancillary care partners in an effort to increase comfort with mental health patients across the CHKD workforce.
  • Provides evidence based therapies to children with mental health diagnosis and co-occurring acute or chronic illness, trauma, or disability.
  • Completes comprehensive report on all of the above for review by broader treatment plan (such as treating MD referral source).
  • Obtains outcome measures through use of psychometric tools, shares data on patient progress with collaborating physicians, and tracks clinical trends.
  • Leads coordination efforts with patients medical care providers in order to ensure seamless integration of medical and mental health care.
  • Masters methods of crisis intervention and is prepared to intervene in a behavioral emergency.
  • Collaborates with medical care teams to provide customized, clear and therapeutic discharge plans for patients transitioning home from hospital stays.
  • Rounds daily on all patients on the consult log as well as all patients in behavioral health restraints.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have Associates in Nursing/Diploma in Nursing with applicable experience, however a BSN is preferred. 
  • One year of post-license psychiatric experience required; three years of post-license psychiatric related work experience preferred.
  • Experience with implementing evidence-based treatments with children and families.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills necessary.
  • Ability to work as a multidisciplinary team member.  
  • Travel to offsite locations may be required.
  • Increased Security Clearance Required for Job Roles in Medical Tower II: FBI fingerprinting, criminal background check, and Child Protective Services registry search.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like. Frequent exposure to communicable disease and moderately adverse working conditions due to performance of certain patient care activities.
