Summary

  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • The Pharmacy Inventory Specialist is accountable to the Pharmacy Purchasing Coordinator, 340B Program Coordinator, and the Pharmacy Support Manager for inventory control and management of drug and non-drug supplies utilized in the pharmacy. 
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Under supervision, is responsible for creating purchase orders of pharmaceuticals, blood products, supplies, equipment, and all other pharmaceutical items in support of patients and the pharmacy.
    • Implements and maintains appropriate inventory control procedures to minimize inventory losses due to expired medications.
    • Maintains adequate stock levels to prevent outages.
    • Responsible for receiving and placing items in stock and the optimization of pharmacy inventory both in the facility and outlying clinics.
    • Ensures that all pharmaceutical products are appropriately labeled with barcodes for patient administration.
    • Assists with the controlled substance inventory, NDC crosswalk updates, maintaining the cleanliness and organization of inventory storage areas, and overseeing the process for removing outdated and recalled medications.
    • Serves as the secondary contact for vendors.  
    • Participates in departmental projects.
    • Participates in on call duties for pharmacy procurement as assigned
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • Current Virginia Pharmacy Technician Certification is required.
    • National technician certification through PTCB or ExCPT preferred at time of hire or obtained prior to second year of employment
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
    • Three years of work experience as a pharmacy technician
    • Two years of pharmacy inventory management experience preferred
    • Demonstrates analytical and problem solving skills. 
    • Excellent communication skills and professionalism necessary to resolve issues related to conflict resolution, operational and system issues. 
    • Must possess the interpersonal skills necessary to develop cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of personnel and vendors when placing, expediting, verifying, and resolving purchasing discrepancies.
    • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
