Summary

  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • The Infection Control Practitioner functions in an advanced clinical role to provide an epidemiologic approach to infection prevention throughout the health system.  Reports to the department leadership.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Works collaboratively with the department director to provide assistance in the oversight, development and implementation of unit or department based infection surveillance and prevention initiatives that improve patient outcomes.
    • Supports the strategic imperatives of the health system as well as ensures compliance with state and federal regulations and accreditation requirements.
    • Provides expertise, consultation and education to all staff (including non-employed staff and healthcare providers), patients, families, and others related to the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections and communicable/transmissible diseases. 
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license. Will consider Medical Technologist or other licensed / certified healthcare professional with related relevant work experience. Licensure / certification must be maintained.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in nursing, clinical quality improvement, microbiology, medical technology, epidemiology or related field preferred.  
    • Two to three years of acute care hospital experience preferred. 
    • Infection control experience preferred. 
    • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills with health care professionals, both internal and external to the organization. 
    • Knowledge of epidemiological principles and infectious diseases a plus. 
    • Excellent computer skills necessary. 
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking required.
    • Demonstrates the ability to work under pressure, independently exercising sound judgment, discretion and initiatives.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.  Frequent exposure to communicable disease and moderately adverse working conditions due to performance of certain infection prevention and control activities.
