Summary

  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • The Release of Information (ROI) Specialist interacts with requestors to identify medical records needed to fulfill an authorization or request for release of information. Reports to HIM departmental leadership.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Prioritizes release of information requests and retrieves medical records per policy and procedure.
    • Performs quality checks to ensure accuracy of release confidentiality and proper invoicing.
    • Safeguards and protects the patient’s rights of privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information and that all release of information are in compliance with the request, authorization, company policy/procedures and HIPAA statues.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • RHIT or RHIA required; or within 1 year of start date have earned or be actively pursuing RHIT or RHIA credential with credential obtained within 3 years of start date for RHIT and/or 5 years of start date for RHIA for continued employment.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum of an Associate’s of Science degree in Health Information Technology preferred.
    • Approximately two to three years progressively more responsible related work experience may be accepted in lieu of an Associate’s degree.
    • Interpersonal skills in order to communicate tactfully with peers, the professional staff, and external requestors (families, attorneys, etc.).
    • Demonstrated knowledge of computers; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Must possess working knowledge of the content of an electronic medical record including basic regulatory requirements.
    • Must demonstrate leadership ability, outstanding communication, organizational skills, and ability to analyze and problem solve independently.
    • Basic working knowledge of medical terminology including medical specialties.
    • Must have basic knowledge of DNV-GL, state and federal laws, and Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations regarding health record documentation and/or release.
    • Experience with Cerner Powerchart preferred.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
