Summary

  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • Under the supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Building Engineer performs general, routine maintenance and servicing operations throughout the hospital plant and associated buildings. The Building Engineer takes a lead role on a variety of different projects and is expected to independently carry out assigned responsibilities. Duties include inspection, preventative maintenance, project management, and repair of equipment, facilities, and utility systems. Performs minor construction and equipment installations. Work is performed in accordance to departmental and manufacturers standards. Seeks guidance from the Engineering Manager when needed.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Performs inspections, maintenance and repairs to facilities to provide a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Performs repairs to failed equipment according to established standards and within acceptable timeframes.  Completes activities in a manner that maximizes effectiveness of the task and minimizes the impact to the customer. 
    • Defines preventative maintenance parameters and processes for new pieces of equipment.  Monitors effectiveness of existing preventative maintenance procedures.
    • Provides notification of equipment shutdowns to appropriate leadership, departmental personnel, and Service Response Center Operators. 
    • Maintains documentation to accurately record equipment problems and failures specifically including, but not limited to, work order completeness. 
    • Provides complete documentation as required by management and for authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) specifically including, but not limited to, work order documentation.
    • Creates a bill of materials from blueprints.
    • Develops technical training parameters.
    • Ensures good rapport and cooperative working relationship with internal and external customers. Participates in all hospital and departmental training as required by leadership.
    • Responds promptly and appropriately to all forms of Hospital communications including, but not limited to, pagers, radios, telephone, e-mail messages, verbal and written communications.
    • Provides guidance and direction to others. Delegates specific project management responsibilities to others.
    • Plans, organizes, and coordinates small projects. 
    • Works from blueprints and estimates projects. 
    • Manages individual inventory following departmental inventory management and control parameters. 
    • Performs under duties and specialized tasks as assigned by leadership.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • License in electrical, HVAC, or plumbing is preferred but not required. Will substitute experience for licensure.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Some college classes in technical field (electrical, HVAC, or plumbing) a plus.
    • Minimum of five years’ experience in a healthcare setting.
    • Working knowledge of Nation Fire Protection Association codes and guidelines.
    • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively and respectfully with team members, various levels of management, and internal and external customers.  
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
    • Must maintain a positive attitude and be able to work collaboratively in a team environment. 
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Work is performed inside and outside of the hospital in all weather conditions.
