GENERAL SUMMARY
-
The Speech Pathologist is responsible for accurately evaluating, diagnosing, preparing, implementing, monitoring and supervising an individually tailored therapy program to maximize performance and obtain treatment goals. Reports to department leadership. The Mental Health Speech and Language Pathologist on the Neurodevelopmental Disorders Unit (NDU), performs speech and language assessments and provides individual and group speech and language services as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team and the behavioral team on the NDU. These services may meet requirements in accSordance with IEP and behavior and treatment plans, as required. The Mental Health Speech and Language Pathologist has specific training and experience in supporting the communication needs of individuals with developmental disorders, including augmentative and assistive communication. The SLP educates staff and families in how to use and support their child’s communication. The SLP works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team which includes special education teachers, psychologists, behavior analysts, occupational therapists, other speech and language pathologists, physical therapists, psychiatrists, coaches and nurses to design and provide services that support the achievement of academic, behavioral, and daily living goals of students in accordance with the Individual Treatment Plan, IEP and/or behavior support plan. Reports to the Manager of Acute Mental Health Services and Operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Tests, evaluates, treats, diagnoses and prescribes treatment for patients experiencing speech, language, cognition, swallowing and/or communication disorders.

Provides a full range of diagnostic, counseling and rehabilitative services.

Assists in the development and maintenance of policies, procedures, protocols to enhance patient outcomes.

Performs other duties as assigned.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
-
Current Virginia state licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Current Certification of Clinical Competence through the American Speech-Language, Hearing Associations (ASHA).

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
-
Master’s degree in speech-pathology/communication sciences and disorders.

Two or more years of clinical experience working with individuals with developmental disorders, including children with autism and intellectual disability. Experience with social skills teaching and behavior support strategies required.

Knowledge of speech-language pathology principles and theories.

Knowledge and experience in the administration of a variety of assessment tools, treatment plans and equipment associated with communication, language and oral-motor disorder.

Must display strong interpersonal, planning, and analytical skills, professionalism, and maturity.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to adapt readily to change, work flexibly within a team, and work within a fast-paced environment.

Ability to meet on call requirements of department.

WORKING CONDITIONS
-
Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
