Summary

  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • The role of the Clinical Pharmacist Specialist involves being a pharmacology consultant, patient advocate, and a fiscal conscience to the healthcare team while providing pharmacy services to meet the needs of patients/care providers, physicians, nurses and other healthcare team members. Responsible for the coverage of the Medication Evaluation and Data (MED) Service and for the direct supervision and education of the pharmacy residents and students. Reports to the Clinical Pharmacy Manager. 
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Provides pharmaceutical care and expert consultation to healthcare professionals to ensure proper pharmacotherapeutics for the patients treated at CHKD.
    • Provides pharmacy services to meet the needs of patients/care providers, physicians, nurses and other healthcare team members.
    • Follows departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and state and federal pharmacy regulations regarding the dispensing of oral and intravenous medications.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • Must possess a Virginia Pharmacy License or be eligible for licensure within four months of hire.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Must be a graduate of an ACPE accredited college or school of pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
    • Completion of an American Society of Hospital Pharmacist (ASHP) approved PGY-1 residency in a pediatric hospital or an ASHP PGY-1 residency with an emphasis in pediatrics is required. 
    • An AHSP PGY-2 residency or fellowship in pediatrics is preferred.
    • Residency Preceptor qualification as defined by ASHP is required.
    • Eligibility for Medical Staff credentialing as defined in the Medical Staff Bylaws is preferred. 
    • Must possess pharmaceutical care skills in the area of work or assignment (pediatric medicine, PICU, NICU or Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, etc).
    • Must have interpersonal skills to communicate and gain cooperation of hospital administration and staff, patients, their families and guests regarding drug therapy and other important aspects of pediatric pharmaceutical care. 
    • Must have analytical skills to ensure medication is ordered and prepared in accordance with professional standards and practices. 
    • Must possess critical thinking skills to determine when to consult and advise physicians and patients as to the use of medications and their possible side effects.
    • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Increased Security Clearance Required for Job Roles in Medical Tower II: FBI fingerprinting, criminal background check, and Child Protective Services registry search.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
