Summary

  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • The Dialysis RN is responsible for direct and individualized nursing care of patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles and standards of care. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of the Dialysis Nurse include the specialized care for patients requiring chronic and acute dialysis (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and infusion services.  Reports to department leadership. 
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Safely and effectively operates dialysis equipment, cannulates and maintains patient access sites, effectively monitors patient during treatment modalities and provides for patient family education.
    • Accurately interprets and records information, identifies and responds to irregular dialysis reactions and notifies appropriate medical team member.
    • Maintains and cleans equipment according to regulations. 
    • Maintains dialysis water system and testing according to regulations. 
    • Supports performance improvement activities and training and orientation of staff.
    • Maintains competence in dialysis equipment and services.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license.
    • Pediatric and RN specialty certification preferred. 
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Graduate of a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree preferred.
    • Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Peritoneal Dialysis and/or Hemodialysis experience preferred.
    • Role autonomy and independence required.
    • Strong IV skills required.
    • CPR training required or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
    • PEARS training must be obtained within 6 months of hire. 
    • Must provide record of a completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript for those areas performing complexity testing.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
