Summary

  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • Under departmental supervision or the direction of the circulating Registered Nurse, follows established policies, procedures and regulations and performs/assists various technical procedures or drug preparation, maintenance or exams.  Functions in a perioperative surgical technologist role.  Responsible for additional duties, including, but not limited to, performing in the role of SPD Technician and Anesthesia Technician.  Reports to the Operating Room Manager.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Works with a Registered Nurse specialist as a clinical expert, resource person and role model for staff and physicians by providing specialty/specialties with appropriate support. 
    • Prepares and maintains supplies, instrumentation and equipment. 
    • Keeps staff updated on changes within specialty/specialties through staff meetings, education in-services, and other educational opportunities. 
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • Certification in surgical technology or operating room technology through the National Association of Operating Room Technicians required.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology, operating room technology or a school of practical nursing required. 
    • Minimum of two years of experience in a Surgical Technician role, required. 
    • Knowledge of working with vendors to support the specialty team required.
    • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with the surgical team and maintain effective contact with physicians and hospital employees.
    • Familiarity and manual dexterity required with all surgical instruments, supplies, equipment and procedures.
    • Analytical skills necessary to develop solutions to problems concerning technical needs of surgery.
    • Familiarity with anesthesia equipment and cleaning procedures.
    • Knowledge of inventory management techniques.
    • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when conducting procedures and operating special computer software.
    • BLS-HCP Certification required and/or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Surgical areas work environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals. Possible exposure to infectious agents when handling instruments or hazardous materials.  Potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.
