Summary

General Summary: The RNFA works in collaboration with surgeons and health care team members to facilitate optimal outcomes for patients undergoing surgical procedure. Registered Nurses practicing as first assistants in surgery are functioning in an expanded perioperative nursing role. The RNFA provides developmentally appropriate patient care using the nursing process under the direct supervision of the surgeon and applies knowledge, skill and critical thinking necessary to assist in performing a safe operation. Develops an individualized nursing plan of care in response to specific patient needs within a defined scope of practice and AORN standards. Communicates with other members of the healthcare team to assure critical information is relayed throughout the perioperative period. Reports to departmental management.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience, Education and Training Minimum: Graduate of a Bachelors of Science in Nursing program required.  Will consider Associates in Nursing / Diploma in Nursing with applicable experience and actively enrolled in a BSN program within three years completion from the date of hire. Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license.  Pediatric experience preferred.  CNOR certification required.  Graduate of an RNFA program accepted by the Certification Board Perioperative Nursing.  Three years experience in perioperative nursing.  One year experience in cardiothoracic operative nursing preferred. CPR & PALS certification required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
